Lioness saves cub from cliff fall

Lioness rescues her cub from a ravine in the Masai Mara game reserve.
Rescued ... cub is lifted to safety

A BRAVE lioness shows raw strength as she lifts her tiny cub to safety in a dramatic cliff-side rescue.

Mum came to the rescue after the young male wandered off from the herd and became stranded above a ravine.

Facing an almost vertical climb and the prospect of a huge drop, the lioness carefully made her way to the ledge where the cub was stuck.

She then had to dive for him when he fell from the crumbling refuge.

The lioness eventually clawed her way back to the top with the cub in her jaws.

Once back to safety, she gave the wayward youngster an affectionate lick of the head.

The amazing rescue at Kenya's Masai Mara game reserve was captured by wildlife photographer Jean-Francois Largot.

Owning a Private Island

Our summer of discontent is over. Between the scary debt-ceiling debacle in Washington, economic woes in Europe, and frightening stock-market gyrations, it's time to get away, right? So what would it be like to escape to your own getaway in the Florida Keys, off the coast in the Northeast, or on the banks of Lake Michigan?

Usually impervious to market swings, even the private island market has adjusted to the weak economy, with prices dropping as much as 50 percent, according to Farhad Vladi, president of Vladi Private Islands. More sellers are also obtaining building permits in advance of sale -- a long process that can be one of the biggest drawbacks to creating an island retreat.

Don't fool yourself: Owning an island is a luxury, not an investment. It can take two to five years to complete a private refuge on an undeveloped piece of land. Purchasing an island that comes with everything you need speeds up the process, but you give up the opportunity to truly make it your own, something that Chris Krolow, president of Private Islands Inc., says is often important to his well-to-do clients.

So whether you have the will and the way, or just wonder what it would be like, take a look at these islands for sale.

The real Catwoman

Divorcee pays £26k a month to house 1,000 felines

Mad about the cat ... Lynea Lattazio has dedicated her life - and money - to her 1,000 feline friends
Mad about the cat ... Lynea Lattazio has dedicated her life - and money - to her 1,000 feline friends

A DIVORCEE forks out £26,000 a month to look after her 1,000 rescued moggies.

And she was forced to sell her diamond wedding ring and car when the cost of keeping the cats soared as she took more in.

Lynea Lattazio runs Cat House On The Kings – the world's largest cage-free cat sanctuary. She says: "I'm not crazy, but what I do is crazy."

Sanctuary ... Divorcee Lynea with some of her 1,000 cats in her 12 acre ranch in Parlier, California
Sanctuary ... Divorcee Lynea with some of her 1,000 cats in her 12 acre ranch in Parlier, California

At the moment the gated property in Fresno, California, is home to 800 adult cats, 100 boarding cats and around 100 kittens, cared for by Lynea and her 23 dedicated support staff.

The rescued felines' food and medical supplies cost a whopping £26,000 each month, but that staggering amount has not stopped the cat-lover.

Lynea said: "I was never allowed a kitten as a child and that's all I ever wanted.

"I think it must be something from a past life that makes me care about them the way that I do.

"Cats are independent, they're humorous, they're not as needy as a dog - I just love them.

"I wake up happy every morning. I feel fulfilled because I know I'm doing something good for the world.

"The cats love me no matter what I look like."

Lynea's cat project began 20 years ago when she brought home 15 sick kittens after going to pick up just two for her father.

She said: "Within a year I had 96 rescued cats that would have been put down.

"Within three years I had 350 cats and as word got round what I was doing people just started leaving boxes of abandoned cats outside my door."

Now Lynea has more than 1,000 of the furry felines.

She added: "Up until I had 350 cats I knew them all by name.

"After that they came in so fast that I lost track.

"I now know around 100 personally."

Lynea received the 12-acre ranch property as part of her divorce from her millionaire husband and paid for the growth of Cat House On The Kings out of her own pocket.

She said: "I sold my diamond wedding ring and my Mercedes to pay the spiralling costs."

But she is still in debt and owes more than £90,000 on her mortgage alone for all the developments she has added.

She revealed: "I get a lot of donations from the public and also from Ellen Degeneres' Halo program that helps with charities in California.

"I dip into my retirement fund to make up any shortfall.

"I can't retire anyway; I'm going to do this until I drop dead so I might as well use the money for something useful."

Lynea has even moved out of the five-bedroom house at the centre of the property.

And each of her eight insulated cat houses is equipped with heaters and feeding stations for the moggies.

She said: "The kittens are bottle fed and sick cats are given medication and even surgery on site at the special cat intensive care unit.

Feline heaven ... feeding time at the sanctuary

"There is even an old cats' home for them to live out their last years in comfort."

Out of all the cats and 20 dogs she cares for Lynea does have favourites.

She added: "I have one cat and one dog that I would not part with for anything.

"My cat Daphne, who I got when she was just four months-old and hated being held, is now the sweetest and cutest cat here.

"My dog Shye Ann is a Rottweiler-Chow mix. I used to buy Rottweilers, before I realised how many are killed at shelters. I call her my Rottweiler-wannabe."

The immediate area around Fresno is known for some of the highest death rates among rescued cats.

Lynea said: "That is why we are here to be a no-kill sanctuary."

The Forbes 400: The Richest People in America, 2011

The economy is down but America's wealthiest are up, proving that it pays to be your own boss.

Despite the stalled economy, the nation's wealthiest are worth a combined $1.53 trillion, nearly equivalent to the GDP of our neighbor Canada. Their total wealth is up 12% in the year through August 26, when we took a snapshot of everyone's net worth, meaning these affluent folks did slightly better than the markets; the S&P 500, for instance, was up 10% in that time.

But it's not simply a case of the rich getting richer. The Forbes 400 grows more meritocratic over time. An all-time high 70% of this year's list are self-made, up from 55% in 1997.

Bill Gates was the richest person for the 18th straight year, worth $59 billion; the last time he didn't rank no. 1 was in 1993 when his good friend Warren Buffett was on top. Buffett, who's been spending a lot of time talking about raising taxes on the rich, is still no. 2 but the gap is widening. His fortune tumbled $6 billion in the past year, making him the biggest loser in terms of total dollars. He gave away $3.27 billion since last year's rankings but was also pinched by a 10% drop in Berkshire Hathaway's stock.

Rounding out the top 10 on The Forbes 400: Oracle founder Larry Ellison ($33 billion), industrialists Charles and David Koch ($25 billion apiece), Wal-Mart heirs Christy Walton ($24.5 billion), Jim C. Walton ($21.1 billion) and Alice Walton ($20.9 billion), hedge fund investor George Soros ($22 billion), and casino king Sheldon Adelson ($21.5 billion).

The headlines in this our 30th year of The Forbes 400 belong not to the old stalwarts but to a younger group of entrepreneurs marching their way up the ranks, particularly those who are profoundly impacting social behavior online. These entrepreneurs are using technology to unleash power and make fortunes, and it is these folks who will likely help jump-start the American economy again.

Leading the pack is Facebook's Mark Zuckerberg, who added $10.6 billion to his fortune, making him the year's biggest gainer and pushing him into the top 20 for the first time — he ranks no. 14 with a net worth of $17.5 billion. That puts him ahead of Google rivals Sergey Brin and Larry Page, who added $1.7 billion apiece to their fortunes but slipped five spots in the rankings and are tied at no. 15.

The hoodie-clad 27-year-old Zuckerberg is one of 6 club members to get rich from Facebook. Others include newcomers Sean Parker and Jim Breyer, Facebook's venture capitalist, as well as Zuckerberg's former roommate Dustin Moskovitz, whose birthday is eight days after the Facebook chief's, making him America's youngest billionaire. Three other social media mavens made their debut including LinkedIn's Reid Hoffman, Groupon's Eric Lefkofsky and Zynga's Mark Pincus.

Other notable entrepreneurs among the 18 newcomers include Green Mountain Coffee's Bob Stiller, Go Daddy's Bob Parsons, and energy tycoons Farris and Dan Wilks. Six people, including Starbucks' Howard Schultz and Quicken's Dan Gilbert, returned to the list after a year or more absence.

Three members of last year's list have died: John Anderson, William Cook and Jess Jackson. Twenty-one missed the cut, including at least a dozen billionaires, like University of Phoenix's John Sperling, whose net worths were just shy of $1.05 billion, the price of admission in 2011.

The top mission for the world's most magnanimous human being Bill Gates (he's already given away $28 billion) is to end polio, which still exists in four countries and requires $1 billion a year for vaccinations; his foundation chips in $200 million. He's also tackling malaria by providing more bed nets and backing development of a low-cost vaccine. Slower progress on the education front: After delivering $2 billion-plus in grants to help high schools from 2000 to 2008, Gates admitted that efforts "fell short." Just one-fourth of his net worth is still held in Microsoft (Nasdaq: MSFT - News); the rest is in private equity, global stocks, bonds and private companies. With help from billionaire buddy Warren Buffett, he's convinced nearly 70 of the world's wealthiest to sign his "Giving Pledge," promising to donate the majority of their wealth to charity either during their lifetime or after death. In April toured Amazon ruins and jungles with wife, Melinda, and their children.

Warren Buffett, the second richest man in America, thinks he and his fellow billionaires should be paying more money to Uncle Sam. In August Buffett penned an opinion piece in the New York Times arguing that tycoons need to pay more taxes: "While the poor and middle class fight for us in Afghanistan, and while most Americans struggle to make ends meet, we mega-rich continue to get our extraordinary tax breaks." That same month Buffett went bargain shopping and invested $5 billion in beleaguered Bank of America, a move similar to his backing of Goldman Sachs during the credit crisis. Buffett suffered a rare blemish this March after top executive and potential successor, David Sokol, resigned amidst allegations of self dealing; charges were never filed. Meanwhile shares of his conglomerate, Berkshire Hathaway (NYSE: BRK-A - News), have fallen 10% since last August, while the S&P 500 climbed 10% over the same span. Along with billionaire buddy, Bill Gates, Buffett continues to push the Giving Pledge, wrangling new tycoons to agree to ultimately give away 50% of their fortunes. The son of Nebraska stockbroker met value investor Benjamin Graham while studying economics at Columbia. Took over textile firm Berkshire Hathaway in 1965, company now holds vast investments including banks, insurance, railroads and restaurants.

Unknown ... this 'monkey' was handed into a zoo but nobody knows what species it is

ZOO workers believe they have found a new monkey species after this little critter was handed in to them.

Keepers said they were unable to determine what the animal — with its hazel eyes and orange, brown and white dappled fur — was.

It was brought to the zoo by an anonymous man in Wenling, China.

Earlier this year, the same zoo hosted a "wedding" between seven-year-old male monkey Wukong and six-year-old female Xiaoya.

Zoo owners hoping the ceremony would attract more visitors must be pleased with their new attraction.

Hunk of junk ... the scrap metal recreation of one of the 1955 classic Mercedes ''Uhlenhaut Coupe''

A GROUP of friends have recreated an iconic 1955 Mercedes race car worth £60K – out of JUNK.

The three car-loving men took seven months to reinvent the classic 300 SLR ''Uhlenhaut Coupe'' using 10,000 pieces of scrap metal that they had painstakingly sourced.

Although their incredible hunk of junk can't be driven, it's still worth a whopping £60,000.

The German pals - Armin Ciesielski, Peter Brakel and Walter Willer – all work at Giganten aus Stahl which translates as Giants of Steel.

The original Uhlenhaut reached an unprecedented 180mph when it was tested in 1955 – and would have been the fastest car in the world if Mercedes had put it into production.

But the speedy roadster was deemed too fast at the time and only two prototypes still exist at the Mercedes museum in Germany.

Armin said: "The Uhlenhaut is a really special Mercedes and we wanted to make a replica.

“Alhamdulillah berkat niat baik, sedikit demi sedikit, lama-lama jadi bukit.

- DM

China's super rich set sights on superyachts

(CNN) -- As China's super rich grow ever richer they need new toys to play with. Now, some are betting that superyachts will be the next big thing for those Chinese millionaires wanting to show off their bling.
"There's no question that Chinese have the appetite and the deep pockets for a thriving yacht culture," says Traugott Kaminski, China CEO for upmarket yacht firm Sunseeker -- which was one of the first to enter the then almost non-existent market back in 2003.

Now the company says it is about secure a deal worth up to $33 million, selling five yachts to a mainland Chinese customer. And with recent figures showing that Asia's economic giant has over 875,000 millionaires there could plenty more orders to come.

There's certainly ample room for growth. According to figures cited by state media, there are about 1,300 private yachts in China. This compares to 17 million privately owned recreational boats in the United States, the world's biggest yacht market, according to industry publication International Boating Industry.
But where some see China as a yacht-seller's paradise, others are more cautious.

"In 2010 China only imported about 100 yachts -- that's not a lot when you consider the country's wealth and population," says Bart Kimman, Dutch CEO of Asia Yacht Services, a Hong Kong brokerage firm tailored to the growing Asian market.

While Kimman stresses that demand has certainly increased from next to nothing only two years ago, he believes that the Chinese market is still strangled in a net of prohibitions.

He argues that modern yachts need modern marinas, with properly trained staff -- "But who wants to invest millions in a high-tech marina," he asks, "only to find out that you have to rebuild the whole thing because of an obscure regulation?"

A 42% tax on imports of foreign yachts is also proving prohibitive, he says. "OK, so a rich guy is a rich guy, but if he wants to buy a $5 million toy and he's facing the prospect of paying another $2 million in tax ... he's going to think twice!"

Dr. Keyu Jin is an assistant economics professor at the London School of Economics. She says trailblazing Chinese trend setters will need to take up yachting before it really takes off.
"How do you jump-start a hobby?" she asks. "It's like European wine in China -- in the beginning no one drank it, then a very few people started drinking a particular French brand, now finally there is a big market. It's a herd mentality." she says.

Jin adds that there are cultural barriers that may delay the yachting revolution.
"While some of China's rich are happy to spend their money on lavish things, others have a more traditional view about ostentatious displays of wealth," she says.

"'Big trees attract more wind' is the old saying, and the Confucian view that the more conspicuous you are the more risks you put yourself into still acts as a sort of restraint for many."
She adds: "Unlike Brazil -- another emerging market for yachts -- Chinese people don't like beaches much, they don't like the sun and they're not interested in getting a tan."

But Kaminski is fully undeterred. "Sure, Chinese will use the boat differently to their counterparts in the West," he says. "In my dealings there is a greater emphasis on the safety and stability, and our customers prefer a hard-top roof to shield them from the sun. Karaoke rooms are also very popular -- this is all just a matter of different tastes."

According to the Sunseeker CEO, the Chinese market will eventually be bigger than the whole European market put together. "You cannot expect this in five years -- there are still these problems with infrastructure and so on," he says. "But once these issues are solved -- which they will be -- then the floodgates will open."

The swede smell of success Man grows record-breaking veg

WALES NEWS SERVICE

A GARDENER has set a new record for the world's biggest swede.

Ian Neale's home-grown Swedish turnip weighs in at a whopping 6st 1lb — beating the previous record by 3.5lbs.

The former garden centre owner's passion for giant veggies started 30 years ago — when he made a bet with pals over who could grow the biggest onion.

Ian, from Newport, in South Wales, now grows everything from giant melons and tomatoes to carrots and parsnips.

He narrowly missed out on the title two years ago, when he was beaten by Alaska's Scott Robb, who presented a 5st 8lb swede.

But he is no stranger to harvesting triumphs — in 2001 he held the Guinness World Record for the biggest beetroot and celery when they each tipped the scales at more than 3st 6lbs.

The 68-year-old spends up to 70 hours per week perfecting his crop during peak gardening season.
He said he was "chuffed" with his achievement — which came after months of green-fingered hard graft.
He added: "You have got to put a lot into it, you've got to let it take over your life. If you are not going to try to win, then don't do it."
