Korean Air is to inaugurate its new A380 “superjumbo” on a route between New York City and Seoul this week.

The airline, which is the seventh in the world to fly the enormous Airbus aircraft, will wave off the first A380 flight from New York across the Pacific Ocean on August 9, launching what it describes as a “new age of air travel.”

It will be the first A380 service between Asia and New York, carrying some 407 passengers — considerably less than the 525 that the A380 is capable of.

Korean Air says that this makes room for a more spacious cabin, with 301 passengers in economy class, 94 lie-flat sleeper seats spaced six feet apart on the upper business deck and 12 first-class suites.

The aircraft also holds three bars, all for premium passengers — the Celestial bar, a cocktail lounge at the rear of the business class upper deck, another self-service bar at the front of the business-class deck, and a bar reserved for the use of first-class passengers only.

Passengers on board can also visit the world’s first in-flight duty free outlet, a compact area selling cosmetics, perfumes, liquor and accessories that are magnetized to ensure they don’t fall off the shelves if the aircraft hits turbulence.

The route is to run between Seoul and New York every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday through August before switching to become a daily service from September.

A ONE-OFF version of the world's fastest car has come onto the market - for a wallet-busting £2.1MILLION.

Luxury car dealer Tom Hartley has taken delivery of this pristine Bugatti Veyron Super Sport.

The 268mph 'Sang Noir' model, which has been limited by Bugatti to 257mph to protect its tyres, is a unique example of the Super Sport - itself restricted to just 30 models.

It is the most expensive car ever to be advertised - with the lucky owner parting with £2.1 million for the keys and logbook.

But with the eye-watering price tag comes unbeatable performance.

The Super Sport is capable of 0-62mph in 2.5 seconds, 0-124mph in 6.7 seconds and the ability to cover one mile in just 23.6 seconds.

These stunning figures come courtesy of the car's quad-turbocharged 8-litre engine which develops a colossal 1,200bhp - 200bhp more than a standard Veyron.

This particular model was the second to roll off the company's production line in Molsheim and was the display car at this year's Geneva Motor Show.

The first five models were intended to be exact replicas of the world record-breaking model.

But the customer who specified this model loved the performance but wasn't overly fond of the design and opted to have his Super Sport in matt black with a number of interior differences including orange seats.

Antilia Taj Mahal kurun ke-21


MENARA Antilia berdiri megah sebagai kediaman paling mewah di dunia tetapi ramai yang beranggapan ia tidak mewakili keadaan sosioekonomi India.


SUNGGUHPUN terdapat jutaan rakyat di India yang menderita akibat dihimpit kemiskinan teruk, kehebatan negara itu mampu melahirkan ramai jutawan dalam pelbagai bidang menjadi perhatian dunia.

Salah seorang jutawan tersebut adalah pemilik syarikat konglomerat Reliance Industries, Mukesh Ambani, 54, yang menggemparkan dunia apabila membina kediaman setinggi 27 tingkat dan termahal di dunia.

Rumah idaman Ambani setinggi 173.73 meter dan seluas 3,437 meter persegi itu dikenali sebagai Antilia. Menelan belanja kira-kira AS$1 bilion (RM3.2 bilion), ia yang dianggap Taj Mahal kurun ke-21, dilengkapi pelbagai kemudahan ultra mewah seperti spa kesihatan, gimnasium, panggung wayang berkapasiti 50 tempat duduk dan kolam renang.

Lebih menarik, menara yang terletak di Altamount Road, iaitu kawasan kelas atasan selatan Mumbai, dilaporkan mempunyai enam tingkat tempat letak kereta, kolam renang, dewan tarian, tiga tempat pendaratan helikopter, sembilan lif dan empat taman tergantung.

Ambani dikatakan telah menggaji 600 orang kakitangan untuk bekerja di rumah mewah tersebut yang hanya dihuni oleh ahli keluarganya.

Reka bentuk rumah mewah berkenaan adalah ilham sebuah firma terkenal dari Chicago, Amerika Syarikat (AS), Perkins & Will manakala kontraktor pembinaan utamanya adalah syarikat Leighton Holdings yang berpangkalan di Melbourne, Australia. Menara seumpama tindanan bongkah-bongkah berbeza saiz itu mengambil konsep Asia kontemporari.

Tunjuk kekayaan


JURUCAKAP Ambani menyatakan bahawa kekecohan mengenai hal jualan tanah lot Antilia tidak ada kena-mengena dengan syarikat Reliance Industries.


“Ia merupakan sejumlah wang yang amat besar dibelanjakan bagi menunjuk kekayaan,” kata Hamish Mcdonald yang merupakan pengarang Ambani & Sons: A History of the Business.

“Secara tidak langsung, ia meletakkan hartawan perniagaan ini sebagai Maharaja India yang baharu,” petiknya dalam biografi itu.

Sementara itu, Shobhaa De yang merupakan seorang sosialit, penulis pojok dan pengarang memberitahu bahawa di Mumbai, penduduknya boleh menerima apa sahaja malah melakukan sesuatu perkara dalam nisbah yang besar.

“Bagaimanapun, ia merupakan satu kediaman menakjubkan,” akuinya.

Ambani meraih kekayaan melalui syarikat konglomerat Reliance Industries yang terlibat dalam perniagaan minyak, peruncitan dan bioteknologi. Keluarganya sudah lama dikenali ramai malah dianggap keluarga paling bertuah di India.

Sementara itu, Ahli Sosiologi Universiti Jawaharlal Nehru, New Delhi, Dipankar Gupta, berkata, meskipun terdapat banyak jutawan di negara itu, namun mereka tidak mencerminkan kebaikan ekonomi negara tersebut.

“Tidak semestinya ramai orang melihat mereka sebagai hero rakyat. Begitupun, ada yang beranggapan sedemikian,” ujarnya.

Bagaimanapun, Ambani sebagai orang paling kaya di India berdepan dengan satu kemungkinan penyiasatan persekutuan terhadap pembinaan rumah agam 27 tingkat miliknya.

Pemerintah negeri Maharashtra sedang mempertimbangkan sama ada penyiasat pusat perlu mengkaji dakwaan bahawa terdapat perkara yang tidak menurut peraturan mengenai jualan tanah.

Antilia yang menjadi salah sebuah daripada kediaman paling mahal di dunia itu dilaporkan media sebagai menara yang terbina dengan menindas keutamaan dan juga hak pihak lain.

Di sebalik kekecohan tersebut, majalah Forbes melaporkan bahawa Pengerusi Reliance Industries itu yang juga orang kesembilan paling kaya di dunia telah berpindah ke menara 174 meter itu tahun lalu.

Tanah rizab

Menteri Hal Ehwal Minoriti dan Wakaf Maharashtra, Mohammed Arif Naseem Khan, memberitahu persidangan Dewan Undangan Negeri bahawa lot tanah seluas empat hektar tersebut pada asalnya merupakan tanah rizab untuk pendidikan kanak-kanak Muslim.

Wakaf dalam hukum syarak merupakan harta atau tanah rizab untuk tujuan kebajikan atau keagamaan.

Lot berkenaan telah dijual kepada Ambani oleh pihak Amanah Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim Currimbhoy Ebrahim Khoja dengan harga AS$4.77 juta (RM14 juta) pada tahun 2002 dengan perjanjian jual belinya diluluskan Pesuruhjaya Amal Mumbai.


DI SEBALIK kisah para jutawan India, negara itu berhadapan dengan krisis inflasi yang tinggi walaupun membawa imej sebagai negara ekonomi berpotensi.


Begitupun, Mohammed Arif mendedahkan bahawa jual beli itu secara asasnya tidak mendapat kebenaran daripada Lembaga Wakaf Negeri Maharashtra yang menyelia penyelenggaraan dan pentadbiran tanah dan harta wakaf.

“Kerajaan negeri boleh melanjutkan perkara ini kepada Biro Penyiasatan Pusat (CBI).

“Kerajaan akan meminta pandangan Jabatan Kehakiman dan Undang-Undang mengenai isu ini. Jabatan undang-undang sebagai balasan telah merujuk isu berkenaan kepada Jabatan Perumahan pada 25 Julai,” katanya.

Sementara itu, Menteri Perumahan R R Patil memberitahu sebuah akhbar tempatan: “Saya akan bercakap mengenai isu ini selepas meneliti pendapat yang dipanjangkan kepada Jabatan Kehakiman dan Undang-Undang.”

Pertikaian atas jualan tersebut merupakan satu masalah lazim yang merentasi India terutamanya di bandar-bandar besar seperti Mumbai. Di kota padat itu, tapak tanah memang sukar didapati dan menjadi rebutan oleh golongan yang berkemampuan untuk membelinya pada harga tinggi.

Senario itu telah bertiup kencang sejak tahun 2004, apabila Lembaga Wakaf meminta Ambani memberi penjelasan mengenai alasannya tidak mengembalikan lot tanah itu kepada kebajikan.

Ketua pembangkang dalam Dewan Undangan Negeri, Eknath Khadse, dari Parti Bharatiya Janata (BJP), pula mendakwa lot berkenaan bernilai lima bilion rupee (RM335.6 juta).

Dalam pada itu, jurucakap Reliance Industries memberitahu, perkara berkenaan adalah antara Lembaga Wakaf dan Rumah Anak-Anak Yatim. Kekeliruan itu tidak ada kena-mengena dengan syarikat tersebut. – Agensi

CANNOCK, Britain - Perut seorang gadis, Kerri Dowdswell akan membesar seperti dia sedang hamil setiap kali selepas makan, lapor sebuah akhbar semalam.

Namun, perut gadis berusia 23 tahun itu akan kembali kepada keadaan normal beberapa jam selepas itu.

"Saya kerap kali ditanya bila akan bersalin dan ia agak tidak menyelesakan apabila berada dalam keadaan seperti ini," katanya yang berasal dari Cannock, Staffordshire.

Masalah tersebut membuatkan dia terpaksa memakai seluar untuk ibu bersalin setiap kali keluar makan.

Setakat ini, doktor-doktor masih bingung kerana mereka masih tidak mengetahui punca kejadian itu.

Kerri menghidap penyakit itu semasa dia mendapat haid buat kali pertama.

Menurut gadis itu, perutnya akan membesar dalam tempoh 15 minit semasa dia makan.

Namun, katanya, ada ketika perutnya mengambil masa selama beberapa jam selepas waktu makan untuk kelihatan seperti wanita hamil.

SR4.6 billion deal for world’s tallest tower in Jeddah


RIYADH: Kingdom Holding Co. (KHC) chairman Prince Alwaleed bin Talal confirmed in Riyadh on Tuesday that associate firm Jeddah Economic Co. has signed a SR4.6 billion deal with the Saudi Binladen Group to build the world’s tallest tower in Jeddah.

The iconic tower, dubbed as the “Kingdom Tower,” will be over 1,000 meters high, and the construction of this landmark structure overlooking the Red Sea and Obhur Creek will finish within five years and three months.
Addressing a press conference at the KHC headquarters here, Prince Alwaleed said “the project symbolizes the growing business confidence in Saudi Arabia under the wise leadership of Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah.”
The long-term policies of King Abdullah and his government have encouraged the business community to execute these kinds of multibillion riyal projects, said the prince, while allaying fears of any impact on the Saudi economy from regional turmoil.
Prince Alwaleed said the building’s iconic status would not depend solely on its height.
He said the tower would be the centerpiece and first construction phase of Kingdom City, Jeddah Economic Company’s (JEC) new urban development of more than 5.3 million square meters in the north of Jeddah overlooking the Red Sea and Obhur Creek.
He said the project would provide sustainable profits to Kingdom Holding shareholders.
With a total construction area of over 500,000 square meters, the Kingdom Tower will be a mixed-use building featuring a Four Seasons Hotel, Four Seasons serviced apartments, world-class office space, luxury condominiums and an observatory that will be higher than the world’s current highest observation deck.
Referring to the landmark project, Talal Al-Maiman, a board member of KHC and JEC, which was formed in 2009 to develop Kingdom City, said “the vision of constructing the tallest tower in the world in Jeddah belongs to Prince Alwaleed. Its form is brilliantly sculpted, making it quite simply the most beautiful building in the world of any height.”
Al-Maiman said: “The decision of the partners to build the world’s tallest building further demonstrates their belief in investing in this nation.”
He pointed out that five contractors were invited to offer proposals for the Kingdom Tower and a shortlist of three firms submitted final offers for the tower construction.
The Saudi Binladen Group, whose offer was the most attractive in terms of price, quality and schedule was chosen for the project.
The Kingdom Tower in Jeddah is part of the Kingdom City project.
The overall construction cost of the tower is SR4.6 billion and the overall estimated cost of the entire project is anticipated to be SR75 billion.
“We intend Kingdom Tower to become both an economic engine and a proud symbol of the Kingdom’s economic and cultural stature in the world community,” said Al-Maiman.
He said partners of JEC include KHC, Samaual Bakhsh, Abraar, International Holding Company, prominent Jeddah businessmen Abdulrahman Hassan Sharbatly and Binladen Group (SBG).
The capital of JEC is made up of SR8.8 billion in land value, assets worth SR7.3 billion, plus SR1.5 billion in cash contributed by SBG.
The overall Kingdom City master plan is being designed by HOK Architects.
The Kingdom Tower design is both highly technological and distinctly organic.
The Kingdom Tower complex will contain 59 elevators, including 54 single-deck and five double-deck elevators, along with 12 escalators.
Elevators serving the observatory will travel at a rate of 10 meters per second in both directions.
The area in the immediate vicinity of Kingdom Tower is named as the Kingdom Tower Waterfront District.
Designed by AS+GG, the 23-hectare Waterfront District will provide a cohesive and pedestrian-friendly setting for the Kingdom Tower, while creating a pleasant neighborhood experience along the Kingdom City lakefront.
The Kingdom Tower Waterfront District will encompass a high-end shopping mall and additional development parcels that accommodate commercial and high-density residential uses, offices, two luxury hotels and high-quality open spaces, including the central Tower Plaza.

China looks set to claim another crown in the battle for supremacy in the luxury markets of the world as the country’s interest in supercars continues to grow.

China knocked the United States off its perch as the world’s leading car market two years ago – sales there now surpass 18.26 million units per year.

It seems that tastes in the country are turning now to the very high-end of the auto market, an area long dominated by the Americans.

Italian carmaker Lamborghini says it sold 138 cars in mainland China over the first six months of this year – a 60 percent rise from the same period last year – and the company believes it will move more than 300 cars “at the least” by the end of 2011.

The rise in sales comes after Lamborghini moved 206 cars in China last year, a 150 percent rise from 2009.

Last year in the US, Lamborghini sold 290 cars (out of 1,302 units worldwide) and with the Italian carmakers – now part of Volkswagen’s luxury Audi unit – expecting sales in China to surpass 500 per year in the near future, there’s little doubt where the center of the supercar world is now heading.

Lamborghini currently has nine dealerships/showrooms in China but plans to have 20 open and operating by the end of the year.

The carmaker is now waiting for the roll-out of its new 12-cylinder, 700-horsepower Aventador model – priced on the mainland at 6.28 million yuan (678,000 euros) – and already there are 200 pre-orders in from China, according to the company.

According to research carried out by the company, mainland Chinese owners of Lamborghinis are on average the youngest in the world at 35.

“They are self-made men. They are very young but in China most of the money is young,” a spokesperson from the carmaker told the SMP recently.

A procession of the world’s leading luxury carmakers are expanding throughout the Chinese market. According to motor industry watchers IHS Automotive, luxury car sales in China should top 909,900 units this year – up from 727,200 units last year.

The world’s largest luxury carmaker – BMW AG – says it has moved 121, 614 cars in China this year (up 60.8 percent), while Mercedes-Benz says it has sold just over 95,030 cars there this year, already up 59 percent from 2010.
