Barca line up Drogba

BARCELONA are eyeing up a move to nab Didier Drogba on a free transfer from Chelsea.

The Spanish giants want to offer Drogba, 34, a two-year deal worth up to £5million a season to quit Chelsea and snub a move to China, Milan or the USA.

Chelsea have also offered the striker a new two-year deal with owner Roman Abramovich pulling out all the stops to keep him.

But Drogba is out of contract and could quit the Blues after the Champions League final on Saturday.

Though a move to Shanghai FC could be far more lucrative, the lure of playing alongside Lionel Messi and Co could prove irresistible for the Ivory Coast star.

A Barcelona source confirmed: “What the team needs is an attacking player who has the presence and strength to trouble defenders.

“Drogba has that profile and is one of the players the club are looking at.”

Drogba has spent eight seasons at Stamford Bridge but new boss Tito Vilanova, who will succeed Pep Guardiola after the Copa Del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao next week, wants a world-class striker as cover for David Villa.

The Spain superstar missed most of this season with a broken foot but will be fit for next season.

Italian giants AC Milan, who have wanted Drogba for years, were also in touch to declare their interest just after Chelsea beat Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final.

THERE aren't many people who are happy to be around spiders, but this one at least will always look pleased to see you.

The tiny arachnid is called the Happy Face Spider, after the bizarre markings it sports on its back.

The cheerful creature — found in the rainforests of Hawaii — is only millimetres in size, and luckily is harmless to humans.

Snapper Darlyne Murawski said: “I took the picture when I was in Maui, while I was there I wanted to take the opportunity to see if I might be able to find a Happy Face Spider.

“We spent a while looking before we discovered one under a leaf in the rainforest.

“They’re so tiny, they’re difficult to find and you have to look at them through a magnifying glass to see the smiley face.

“But I eventually found one beneath a leaf in a rainforest. At first I was amazed at how small it was, less than a quarter of an inch big.

“You need look at it through a magnifying glass to see its smiley face, but it was fascinating.

“I was so thrilled I couldn’t wait to get home and find out more about it.”

Beetle Royale Amazing fighting insect snaps

THE FIRST rule of this Fight Club is — use insects.

That’s the fighting talk from Polish photographer Igor Siwanowicz, who has spent hours capturing head-to-head stag beetle battles.

His shots of battling insects, which are all male, also include nymphs and caterpillars all showing their true colours in a variety of interactions.

Although the beetles are between four and seven centimetres long, and the mantids less than six centimetres, Igor uses macro photography to capture them in all their creepy-crawly glory.

“The mantids are suspicious of each other and display their wings to appear much larger, but the stag beetles really go at each other,” said Igor.

“They never fight to the death, but in the wild, the loser is tossed down from the tree trunk where the fight has taken place and the victor gets to mate with the female.”

Igor, 35, a research specialist at Howard Hughes Medical Institute in Chevy Chase, Maryland, US, took many of the shots in his former home studio in Munich, Germany.

He said: “I do keep some of my ’models’ as pets.

“Back in Munich, at the peak of my interest in keeping exotic animals, I owned three chameleons, two tree frogs, and 20-some species of praying mantids.”

Igor insists that all the insects are alive during the shooting.

“I’m often asked if the animals are dead, or if I freeze or stun them in any way. That is never the case." He adds: “The work requires a lot of patience.

“The animals cannot be trained into displaying more complex behaviour, but you may learn how to trigger a certain response, such as a threatening display.”

Even though he deals with some poisonous creatures, Igor claims he has never been bitten.

“I’ve never felt threatened when taking photos, even when dealing with an angry hornet or a short-tempered tarantula.

“The most discomfort I’ve ever experienced as a result of photo session came from a New World Tarantula.

“Its venom has no medical significance, but it kicks off the hairs on its abdomen when it gets annoyed and they spread around like a cloud of itching powder — not a nice sensation.”

Igor bought his first camera nine years ago, but he has always had a fascination with bugs.

“My parents are biologists and I grew up surrounded by biology textbooks,” he said.

“I enjoyed browsing through the illustrations and photographs before I learned how to read.”

He hopes to change misconceptions that insects should be feared.

He said: “I often hear that my photos make animals that people would normally step on or run away from look strangely adorable.

“The highest prize a macro photographer can hope for is positive feedback from someone with a phobic fear of creepy crawlies.

“Some people have even turned my photography into art. I’ve seen it transformed into an oil painting, water colours, and there are six people I know of walking around with my photos tattooed on to their skin. How weird is that?”

Blues will axe me

Roberto Di Matteo
NO JOB FOR ROB ... stand-in chief Di Matteo doesn't expect to keep role
Exclusive

ROBERTO DI MATTEO expects to be axed by Roman Abramovich — even if he wins the Champions League.

Chelsea’s FA Cup-winning caretaker boss fears the club’s billionaire owner is ready to dump him and appoint a big-name continental coach in the summer.

But that will not stop the Stamford Bridge favourite going all out for a remarkable Cup double against Bayern Munich in next Saturday’s Champions League final in Germany.

A senior Chelsea source revealed: “Robbie is determined to go for glory against Bayern, even though he’s resigned to leaving regardless of what happens in Munich. He has tried to talk to the club’s hierarchy about pre-season training for next season and been given very short shrift.

“That convinced him he really is just an ‘interim’ manager, filling the post until a full-time appointment can be made.

“He’s hugely disappointed after the miracles he has worked here since taking over from Andre Villas-Boas in March.

“Two Cup finals is an amazing success after inheriting that mess.

“And winning the FA Cup last Saturday was very special. He won it with Chelsea as a player, scoring that amazing goal against Middlesbrough in 1997, and now he has won it as a manager too.

“That guarantees him hero status with the fans but won’t budge the powers-that-be. Everyone knows Villas-Boas was appointed last summer to get rid of the older players. Di Matteo has the full support of all the players but, fundamentally, nothing has changed.”

The Londoners have been linked with departing Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, France coach Laurent Blanc and ex- England manager Fabio Capello as Abramovich prepares to appoint his SEVENTH full-time boss in eight years.

Diintai kelab Portugal

NAZMI bakal menjalani sesi pemilihan bersama kelab Portugal, Beira-Mar minggu depan.

MANCHESTER CITY want to celebrate Premier League glory by handing Roberto Mancini a whopping new £22million contract.

Mancini’s four-year deal will make him the country’s best-paid boss, alongside Alex Ferguson.

City planned to offer Mancini the £2m-a-year pay rise — taking his salary to £5.5m a year — even if they failed to win the title.

But they are even more eager to get the Italian to sign after he masterminded City’s amazing fightback from eight points down to overhaul neighbours United. The two clubs stand level on points but City’s goal difference is eight better.

And they can clinch their first title in 44 years with victory over QPR on Sunday.

Mancini, 47, is already planning for next season at City. He has the green light from owner Sheikh Mansour to make a £30m move for Arsenal striker Robin van Persie, who has a year left on his contract and has so far failed to agree a new deal.

City are also favourites to win the battle with United to land Lille playmaker Eden Hazard, 21, in a £25million deal.

Zoo’s baby tortoises no bigger than 20 pence piece

FAMILIES have been shelling out on a visit to a Hampshire wildlife park – to have a gander at this quartet of baby tortoises as small as a 20 pence piece.

The tiny creatures are the first to be born in five years at Marwell, near Winchester, Hants.

The smallest of the youngsters, at just over a week old, weighed just 3.1grams after hatching.

He and the three others, all critically endangered Egyptian tortoises, went on display to the public for the first time on May 4 and are proving popular with visitors.

Trainee keeper Kimberley Goodfield said: “This is the first time babies have been born in five years.
“Until now we haven’t really had the space to incubate or care for new-borns."

She added: “These babies have come from two different females — it was really exciting when we discovered they were pregnant.

“They began searching for a nest so we gave them a little help and prepared the enclosure for them.”

The eggs were quickly transferred to an incubator soon after being hatched in the tortoise enclosure.
Staff made sure they were kept in controlled conditions — a temperature of 30 degrees and 75 per cent humidity.
And, after 111 days, they were delighted to discover the eggs had begun to hatch.

The babies will now be kept separate from the adults for a few years until they are old enough to fend for themselves in the enclosure.

They are currently in a quarantine tank where members of the public can watch them exploring their new surroundings.

Miss Goodfield said: “They’re not quite old enough to fend for themselves with the adults in the enclosure.
“For now we will keep them separate. We have to be very gentle with them because they’re so small and their shells are not very hard yet.”

The Egyptian tortoise, also called the Kleinmann’s tortoise, is the smallest in the northern hemisphere.
Adults live for up to 50 years. They can grow to around 15 centimetres long and weigh 500 grams.
