LG Electronics To Introduce Dual-core Smartphone Next Month

SEOUL, Dec 16 (Bernama) -- LG Electronics Inc., the beleaguered phone-making giant, said Thursday that it will release a smartphone with a dual-core processor in South Korea next month, hoping its speedy processing ability would help turn around the company's slumping mobile business, Yonhap news agency reported.

The Optimus 2X will be launched in January through South Korea's top mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. and will make its debut in other countries in the following months, LG said in a statement.

The new smartphone is the first of its kind to process information and programmes at a speed comparable to that of a personal computer, LG claimed, as it is powered by a 1-gigahertz Tegra 2 dual-core processor.

Mobile phones, including smartphones, use a single-core processor, which functions as the brain of the phone.

The dual-core processor helps play mobile games and surf the Internet at a faster speed on the 4-inch, Android-running phone, LG said.

The company, which posted record losses from its flagship mobile business, focused its efforts on product development, with more than 250 researchers and developers working on the upcoming model for more than one year, it said.

LG Electronics' mobile division posted a record operating loss of 303.8 billion won (US$269 million) in the third quarter as it responded too slowly to the lucrative smartphone market.
