A BEAUTIFUL butterfly bursts from its chrysalis — in a dramatic rebirth that took almost 24 hours.

The Foxy Emperor’s striking emergence from its drab shell was captured by photographer Jim Hoffman.
He raised the butterfly for weeks after discovering it as a caterpillar so he could document it changing at home in Girona, Spain.

Dutch-born Jim said: “It’s always a special moment to see a butterfly emerging — especially when you have raised it yourself.”
The butterfly, which has a two-inch wing span, is found across Africa and the Mediterranean.
