WELCOME MATT ... Roberto Di Matteo has been named Chelsea manager

ROBERTO DI MATTEO has been confirmed as Chelsea boss on a two-year deal.

And he has set his sights on landing the Premier League title.

Di Matteo took temporary charge after Andre Villas-Boas’ sacking in March and led the team to FA Cup and Champions League glory.

But the former Blues midfielder, 42, knows that he must do better in the Prem than last term, when they finished sixth.

He said: “I’m delighted. We achieved incredible success last season that made history for this great club.

“We want to continue our success in the cup competitions, but we want do do better in the Premier League and bridge the gap between us and the two Manchester clubs.”

Di Matteo binned Villas-Boas’ policy of bringing through young players and reinstated the old guard at Chelsea to devastating effect.

He lost just three of his 21 games in charge and won the support of the club’s senior players in the wake of their Champions League triumph in Munich.

He starts next season without Didier Drogba, but the club have already spent £32million on bringing in Eden Hazard from Lille.

But Di Matteo added: “There will not be a complete overhaul.”

Blues owner Roman Abramovich was in the hunt for ex-Barcelona boss Pep Guardiola, who is taking time out after leaving the Nou Camp.

But Blues chief executive Ron Gourlay said: “Roberto’s quality was clear for all to see when he galvanised the squad last season and helped the club make history.

“The owner and board are pleased he will be continuing his good work.”
